Powerball and Mega Millions are both multi-million dollar jackpot games, and both are played the same way. If you know how to play either Powerball or Mega Millions, you'll have no trouble understanding how to play the other game. The small differences are the drawing days, odds of winning and field of numbers you can select from.
Powerball drawings are held at 9:59 p.m. on Wednesday and Saturday and Mega Millions drawings are held at 10 p.m. on Tuesday and Friday. To play Powerball, players select 5 numbers from a field of 59 white balls plus a Powerball from 1 to 39. With Mega Millions, players select 5 numbers from a field of 56 white balls and a Mega Ball from 1 to 46.
Players can multiply their winnings! To multiply all winnings except the jackpot, players can purchase Power Play (for Powerball), Megaplier (for Mega Millions) or Sizzler (for Hot Lotto) for an extra $1 per play. Powerball prizes are multiplied by 2, 3, 4 or 5 and prizes won on Mega Millions are multiplied by 2, 3 or 4. All Hot Lotto prizes are automatically multiplied by 3.
The Power Play number is selected before each Powerball drawing. There are 16 numbers in the Power Play pool: four 2s, four 3s, four 4s and four 5s.
For each Mega Millions drawing, the Megaplier multiplier number is selected from a field of two 2s, seven 3s and twelve 4s.
