Champlin Resident Wins $200,000 Lottery Prize

Brandi SpodenJULY 10, 2009 — Brandi Spoden of Champlin won a $200,000 prize by playing the Lottery’s Hit the Jackpot scratch game.

On the afternoon of July 9, Spoden stopped at BP of Champlin, 11201 Aquila Drive N. in Champlin and handed the store employee a Hit the Jackpot scratch ticket that won $10. “He asked me if I hit the jackpot and I said, ‘No, that’ll never happen!’” Spoden said. The clerk gave Spoden another Hit the Jackpot ticket that she bought with the $10 in winnings. “I went out to the car and scratched it,” she recalled.

As she scratched the cards in the Blackjack game, Spoden saw that her hand of 21 beat the dealer’s hand of 20. The prize for beating the dealer amazed her — $200,000! “I closed my eyes for a minute and looked at it again,” she recalled. She was still looking at a $200,000 prize, so she immediately drove home to tell her husband about her win.

Spoden laughingly recalled that as she neared her home, “I drove down the road and laid on the horn the whole time.” Spoden’s husband, Doug, acknowledged his wife’s excitement. He said he was working outside when “I heard this horn — she comes driving down the block with her hand on the horn!”

The couple called the Lottery’s headquarters and immediately drove to Roseville to claim the prize.

Hit the Jackpot is a $10 scratch game that offers 25 chances to win up to $200,000. There are currently three of four $200,000 prizes remaining to be claimed. The overall odds of winning a prize by playing the Hit the Jackpot scratch game are 1 in 3.30.
