Minnesota Benefits from PowerballŪ Run

$8.4 million Transferred to State

MARCH 18, 2008
— The Powerball jackpot run that began on Jan. 19, 2008 and concluded with the $276.3 million win in West Virginia on March 15, 2008 generated $8.4 million for the Lottery’s beneficiaries in Minnesota.

“With so much attention focused on the jackpot, the money generated for the recipients of the Lottery’s proceeds is often overlooked,” said Lottery Executive Director Clint Harris. “The $8.4 million that was transferred to the state will benefit all Minnesotans, whether it’s for services supported by the General Fund or environmental projects that receive funding from the Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund, Game & Fish Fund and Natural Resources Fund.”

The $8.4 million was directed as follows:

$4.7 million General Fund

The General Fund supports state services, including public education, local government assistance, transportation, public safety and environmental protection.

$2.2 million Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund

The Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund preserves, restores and enhances Minnesota’s natural resources, including improvements to state parks, the construction of state trails, enhanced hunting and fishing habitat and research to improve Minnesota’s environment.

$772,062 Game and Fish Fund

Money from the Game and Fish Fund is spent on activities that improve, enhance and protect fish and wildlife resources, including conservation, restoration and enhancement of land, water and other natural resources of the state.

$772,062 Natural Resources Fund

Parks and trails and the Duluth, Como and Minnesota zoos benefit from the Natural Resources Fund.

During the jackpot run, more than 574,000 tickets purchased in Minnesota won over $4.1 million. Five tickets were each worth $200,000, while 36 tickets each won $10,000. Two of the tickets worth $200,000 have not yet been claimed — one was sold in Dakota County for the March 15, 2008 drawing; the other was sold in Stearns County for the drawing on Feb. 13, 2008.
