Springfield Resident Wins $102,497 Gopher 5^® Prize

NOVEMBER 3, 2009 — Springfield resident Doug Christensen normally buys one quick-pick ticket for every Gopher 5 drawing. On Oct. 30 he stopped at Tauer’s Super Valu, 101 W. Central St. in Springfield to buy his ticket for that night’s drawing.

Christensen said he called the Lottery’s winning numbers line after the drawing and heard the winning numbers for Oct. 30 were 1-10-18-23-47 — the same numbers printed on his ticket. “I hung up and said, ‘That can’t be right,’” Christensen recalled. “I called the number again, got all five numbers and thought, ‘That doesn’t sound right.’”

He went back to the store, where they checked his ticket and confirmed that he did match all five winning numbers to win $102,497. Christensen claimed his prize at Lottery headquarters in Roseville on Nov. 2.

Two tickets matched the winning Gopher 5 numbers drawn on Oct. 30 to share the $204,994 jackpot. Each ticket was worth $102,497. The winner of the other half of the jackpot is Dwayne Adams of Pipestone.

Gopher 5 is Minnesota’s own cash lotto for which players pick five numbers from 1 to 47 for a chance to win a jackpot of at least $100,000. The odds of matching all five numbers to win the jackpot are 1 in 1,533,939. The odds are 1 in 7,304 for matching four of five numbers to win $500; 1 in 178 for matching three of five numbers to win $15; and 1 in 13 for matching two of five numbers to win $1. The approximate overall odds of winning a prize are 1 in 12.

Gopher 5 drawings are held on Monday, Wednesday and Friday after the Daily 3® and Northstar Cash® drawings. Tickets must be purchased by 6:10 p.m. on the day of the drawing.
