Virginia Resident Wins $40,000 Playing
Powerball® with Power Play®

$40,000 LamkeJUNE 5, 2008 — Pearl Lamke of Virginia always uses the same numbers when she plays Powerball. “I use my birthday, my son’s birthday and my mom’s birthday,” she explained. Four of the first five numbers and the Powerball she selected were drawn on May 31, 2008. Lamke would have won $10,000, but because she purchased the Power Play option, her prize was multiplied by that night’s Power Play number of 4 — to $40,000!

Lamke watched the drawing on television that night. “When the drawing was over I thought, ‘These are really good numbers for me,’” she recalled. “I thought I matched three numbers plus the Powerball, but I looked again and saw the number 25. I said, ‘Wait a minute!’ I didn’t know what I won but I knew I won something.”

As she claimed the prize at Lottery headquarters in Roseville yesterday, Lamke said, “I’ve been playing these numbers for years — they finally worked!”

The winning ticket was purchased at Super One Foods, 601 N. 4th St. in Virginia. The Powerball numbers drawn on May 31 were 3-9-14-17-25 and the Powerball was 8.

A Powerball prize worth $200,000 from the drawing on Feb. 13, 2008 (sold in Stearns County) has not yet been claimed. Players have one year from the date of the drawing to claim all prizes.

Powerball is the multi-state lotto game that offers players nine ways to win. Players select five numbers from 1 to 55 and a Powerball, from 1 to 42. The jackpot is won by matching all five numbers plus the Powerball. Approximate odds of winning a cash prize are 1 in 36.6 and approximately 1 in 146 million to win the jackpot.

For an extra $1 per Powerball play, players can purchase the Power Play option to multiply their prizes (except the jackpot) by two, three, four or five times. A Power Play wheel randomly draws the Power Play number before the winning Powerball numbers are drawn. A Match 5 winner ($200,000) who purchased the Power Play option could win up to $1 million!
