Where Do Minnesota Lottery Dollars Go?

Sure, lottery tickets are about the thrill of a win. But every ticket sold in Minnesota also helps support programs and services that benefit communities across the state.

After prizes are paid and retailers receive commissions, a portion of Minnesota Lottery proceeds goes to the state’s General Fund to pay for many of the services people rely on every day.

Education
One of the biggest areas supported by the General Fund is education. These dollars help fund public schools, early childhood programs, and give financial support to colleges and universities across Minnesota.

Public Safety and Courts
The General Fund also helps support statewide public safety systems, including the State Patrol, courts, correctional facilities, and programs that help prevent crime and support victims.

Health and Human Services
General Fund dollars also help support programs that keep Minnesotans healthy and cared for. This includes services for seniors, people with disabilities, mental health programs, and medical assistance for families who need support.

Aid to Cities and Counties
Some of the money goes back to local communities through programs that support city and county services. This funding helps communities maintain things like police and fire departments, libraries, and other local services without placing the full cost on local property taxes.

Supporting Minnesota’s Outdoors
Lottery dollars also support the environment. Since 1991, the lottery-funded Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund has provided $1.112 billion to more than 1,700 projects, in all 87 counties—like habitat restoration, wildlife research, and conservation efforts across the state.

The Big Picture
Lottery contributions are just one piece of the state budget, but they help support essential services that keep Minnesota running - from schools and public safety to the natural places Minnesotans love to explore.

So, whether you’re scratching a ticket at the kitchen table or checking numbers up at the cabin, every ticket helps support programs and places that matter to Minnesotans.
