From Liberia to Lucky in Minnesota: One Player’s Long-Awaited Lottery Moment
$95,591 North 5 Jackpot Won in Hew Hope
ROSEVILLE, Minn. (Feb. 27, 2026) — When he moved to the United States from Liberia in 2000, he brought more than just his dreams — he brought a tradition.
“I used to play the lottery back home in Liberia,” he said with a smile. “So when I moved here, I just kept playing.”
For years, stopping for gas at the Holiday Stationstore on 42nd Ave N. in New Hope has meant more than just filling up the tank. It’s also meant picking up a few lottery tickets — usually a mix of scratch tickets and lotto games. He continues to return to the same Holiday location time and time again, not just out of habit, but because he genuinely appreciates the friendly, reliable customer service that keeps him coming back. While he’s had some exciting moments over the years — including a $500 win — he’s always believed something bigger could happen.
His friends and family often tease him about playing.
“They always ask why I play the lottery,” he said. “And I tell them, ‘Because one day I might win!’”
That “one day” came on February 24.
After Tuesday’s North 5 drawing, he stopped to scan his tickets — just like he’s done countless times before. But this time was different. He looked at his tickets. Then looked again. And then one more time.
“I checked the winning numbers several times,” he said, still sounding amazed. “I was in shock.”
Even sweeter? He didn’t tell his family right away.
“I can’t wait to surprise them,” he said.
The winnings will go exactly where his heart is — family. He plans to help his son with his upcoming wedding and finally grant his daughter’s long-standing wish: a trip to Liberia. She’s been asking to visit her father’s home country for quite some time, and now that dream will become a reality. He and his wife will make the journey with her, turning a lottery win into a full-circle family homecoming.
From playing the lottery in Liberia to winning in Minnesota, his story is proof that sometimes “one day” really does arrive.
